UK Watchdog Secures Pledges from Apple, Google
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) reported on Tuesday that the proposed steps are intended to refine app assessment procedures and ranking mechanisms for independent developers.
In the previous year, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) declared that the two tech giants operated an “effective duopoly," granting them an inequitable edge in the marketplace.
Apple, in particular, consented to allow developers to seek interoperable entry to features and capabilities embedded in its operating system.
Both firms have pledged to block the exploitation of confidential data from competing applications to advantage their own rival services.
The regulator anticipates that the newly introduced commitments will officially come into force on April 1, 2026.
Authorities cautioned that formal behavioral obligations would be enforced should the companies fail to properly carry out the agreed modifications.
These initiatives are designed to strengthen the UK app sector by providing enterprises with greater assurance to invest and pursue innovation.
The development represents the first significant enforcement step achieved by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) under the recently established digital markets competition regime.
