UK Declares Recognizing Palestine in September
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, "I can confirm the UK will recognize the state of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution."
This statement aligns with a similar promise made by French President Emmanuel Macron the previous week, where he assured that Paris would support recognition of Palestine at the UN gathering in September.
Starmer’s comments were made during a press briefing that followed an urgent Cabinet session, which was convened to address the escalating crisis in Gaza.
The discussion occurred shortly after over 250 Members of Parliament endorsed a letter urging the government to acknowledge Palestinian statehood.
The Prime Minister reiterated that he had consistently emphasized his nation's intention to recognize Palestine "as a contribution to a proper peace process."
He further underlined that the overarching objective remains to ensure both a "safe and secure" Israel and a "viable and sovereign" Palestinian state.
Starmer justified the UK’s planned move by warning that the two-state resolution is currently "under threat."
He indicated that recognition would proceed unless Israel fulfills key conditions.
These include enabling the United Nations to resume humanitarian assistance, making clear there will be no land annexations in the West Bank, and formally committing to a lasting peace initiative aimed at establishing two independent states.
